Richard Mayer

Richard Mayer is the author of Multimedia Learning (2001). In his book, Mayer states that multimedia is important because it forces students to use multiple parts of their brain by focusing on "message" and "representation". Mayer gives several justifications to support multimedia use for learning:

  • Spatial Contiguity - Related pictures and words should be located close together
  • Temporal Coniguity - Present text and pictures simultaneously
  • Modality - Using animation and narration is more effectinve that animatino and text
  • Redundancy - use multiple sources (video and text, etc)
  • Individual Diferences - More advanced students require less involved designs than lower level students
