Individualized Learning refers to learning experiences in which the pace of learning is adjusted to meet the needs of individual students. In other words, individualized learning focuses on the question of “when” students receive a learning activity. In individualized learning, all students go through the same experience, but they move on at their own individual pace. Individualized learning is one important element of personalized learning (along with adaptive learning)
Individualized learning in practice
Individualized learning is most commonly seen in online learning environments. Pretty much every MOOC is built on the idea of individualized learning. Students who read faster or who complete the assignments sooner, for example, can click through to the next screen.
The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) requires the creation of Individualized Education Plans (commonly known as IEPs). These IEPs are plans designed to tailor the learning experience to students with disabilities. In reality, an effective IEP may go far beyond just ajussting the pace of learning to include assistive technology and other supports to address unique physical or cognitive challenges.
